Artist Statement:

“Gender is not something that one is. It is something one does, an act… A ‘doing’ rather than a ‘being’.” -Judith Butler.

Gender expression is not a singular or fixed identity but an evolving process, a dynamic act of exploration. Building one's own identity and expression of gender in relation to the norms of gender expectations is a deeply personal and transformative experience. To claim that there is a norm of expression would be to say that it is abnormal to step outside of the lines. Throughout my life, I have taken many steps in my journey to understand where I sit in my ever-expanding understanding of gender.  Understanding one’s external gender expression and internal gender identity significantly impacts every aspect of one's portrayal in society, down to the smallest gesture or habit.

Being a queer individual, the experience of finding my own definition of gender is tremendously demanding and yet incredibly cathartic. My artwork guides the viewer  through the nuances of gender and masculinity by way of my life, physical expression, and perception of others’ judgment. The work creates an uncomfortable vulnerability, breaking the unspoken formalism that creates a wall between the viewer and the art. By being able to interact with and witness my intimate relationship with masculinity, I implicate the viewer, asking the audience to engage in my dialogue with masculinity.
