Mundane Gender, 2024, Screenprint on paper, 15”x12”

Gendering the mundane experience within the life of a queer individual, I think is something that is inherent in the social complex that we live in today. To say things are “gender neutral” is to build an idea that that object has no gender based representation. But in reality, nothing is void of social and interpersonal gender labeling. Within understanding this piece is to understand the personal thoughts of myself and my life as a transmasculine person.
This is not to say that my experience is singlehandly unique, but better to say that this is my perspective of a larger whole. The phenomenom of having to hold everything in one hand because you have no pockets, in my mind is inherently feminine and though unspoken, is a habit of many who wear womens clothing. Similarly, resting one hand at the top of the wheel while driivng is more often a habit of masculine individuals. These representations are not as loud as the “pink is for girls, blue is for boys,” but it is for those who often worry, “am I being enough of a man? Will they notice this habit?”
